I Shot a Man was born in 2014, out of a stubborn determination to take the blues from its origins and play it as if it were born today.
The result is a sound that is essential, unfinished, unpolished, close to the world in which the blues was born, when instruments were few and rusty, but in the midst of that scrap metal, they were able to give birth to melodies so pure that they became universal.
The absence of the bass forces the trio to invent new arrangements, to rethink rhythmics in a constant dialogue between percussion and a hundred-year-old fingerpicking.
FORMATION:
Domenico De Fazio, electric guitars, resophonic, backing vocals
Manuel Peluso, lead vocals, electric guitar, acoustic
Simone Pozzi, drums, percussion, backing vocals
After the first years in the studio, the band begins its journey in the best Italian clubs, gaining the attention of the public and insiders in the Italian blues scene.
In 2018 the band opens the Animals' concert, at the Torrita Blues Festival. In 2019 it is Keb Mo's support band at the Deltablues Festival in Rovigo.
In 2019 the first studio album, Gunbender, is recorded. The album is recorded live on magnetic tape at Rubedo Recordings, in Turin, Italy.
The release of "Gunbender" is warmly welcomed by the public and industry insiders: the most influential Italian music publications review the band's work with great enthusiasm.
In 2020 I Shot a Man wins the Italian selections of the International Blues Challenge, winning the chance to represent Italy during the international finals in Memphis in 2022.
In May 2022, the band performs in Memphis, at venues on historic Bale Street. A long journey through the southern United States followed, in search of the places of origin of the blues, among jam sessions, improvised live shows, Juke Joints, guns and the goosebumps of the Mississippi Baptist Masses.
After returning from the U.S., the band goes back into the studio.
The work comes as a challenge: to combine the many different influences, and to play new blues music as if it had always been there, hidden somewhere.
"The search pushed us to try to internalize the genres we approached, not to imitate them, but to strip them down and mix them together."
To the distinctly Delta sound of the first album, are added rhythms from modern African desert blues to haunting Hill Country Blues, sounds from the Nashville scene with its Black Keys and Jack White, but also New Orleans tunes, and tinges of 1970s soul.
"The blues is the first music you try to strum when you pick up a guitar in your hand, but it's the last music you really learn to play, and sometimes a lifetime isn't enough. We like to say that this whole thing was a bad idea, because when you decide to play the blues, it means that, somewhere, something went wrong, that there is some score to settle with life."
