Andrea Carrieri has spent a lifetime walking the long road of the blues, learning
its language show by show, mile by mile.
Already active as a guitarist with Jack Daniel’s Lovers in the late 1980s, Carrieri
recorded Stay Out of Jail under the guidance of Steve Berlin (Los Lobos),
alongside legendary guests such as Lee Allen, David Hidalgo, Candye Kane and
Dave Alvin. The band crisscrossed Italy, appeared frequently on national RAI
television, and carried their sound far beyond familiar borders, touring Russia and
Belarus at a time when few Western rock bands dared to do so.
In 1990, after a summer on the road with Rocking Chairs, Carrieri founded Dirty
Hands with Cesare Ferioli and Max Pitardi. What followed was a restless, roadhardened
chapter: long tours across Italy, Europe and the United States, including
extended stays in America and a deep musical partnership with New Orleans
bluesmen as J.Monque D and Andy J. Forest. Over the years, Dirty Hands became
one of Italy’s most respected blues-rooted bands, eventually recording three
albums with harmonica master Egidio “Juke” Ingala, released throughout Europe
by Germany’s CrossCut Records and widely praised for their authenticity and raw
power.
By the late 1990s, Carrieri had logged nearly 900 concerts with Dirty Hands,
sharing stages with artists such as Lynwood Slim and absorbing the blues as a
lived experience rather than a borrowed style. After a long pause from the road,
he returned with renewed focus, favoring leaner blues and rock’n’roll trio
formats, where space, groove and feel carried as much weight as volume.
Alongside his live work, Carrieri expanded his musical vision by composing
soundtracks for documentary films, collaborating with Movie Movie and Rai
Cinema on works dedicated to writers, journeys and memory, including projects
connected to Joe R. Lansdale and Romano Prodi. These scores further revealed
his ability to translate blues feeling into cinematic landscapes.
In 2014, the story came full circle with the rebirth of the band as The Dirtyhands,
followed by a stripped-down evolution into a powerful, minimal lineup. This path
led to Bull’s Eye (2020), a record that captured three decades of road-tested blues
in a single, focused statement.
Today, with All Things Bright, Carrieri turns inward. Recorded solo in October
2024, the album places acoustic guitar and voice at the center, blending original
material with deeply personal interpretations of Big Bill Broonzy, Lightnin’
Hopkins and Big Joe Williams. It is not a departure, but a return: a quieter, more
intimate blues journey that reflects a lifetime spent listening, learning and playing
the music where it lives best—between the strings, the voice and the road.
