"The music of early gospel is one of the deepest roots of American music. Its melodies, harmonies, and lyrics shaped the vocal style and expressiveness of generations of blues, soul, and R&B artists, conveying emotions, life stories, and strength. The songs we gathered in Sacred Roots celebrate this tradition: songs of hope, faith, and struggle, passed down through generations, yet still able to move and inspire us — and anyone who listens today.

We are not religious; each of us expresses our own spirituality in our own way. Our approach to these songs comes from respect, passion, and dedication. We want to convey the emotional and spiritual depth of gospel music without claiming to belong to any particular faith. We believe this music belongs to everyone, and that anyone can interpret it with sincerity, feeling, and authenticity.

At the same time, we are deeply aware of the historical roots and cultural significance of this music. We recognize the roots and the pain behind this tradition, while also embracing the universal language of music and its power to connect us all — beyond skin color. We are fully aware of the legacy and meaning of the songs we interpret, and we approach them with humility, respect, and reverence. We do not see ourselves as imitators, but as musicians who honor the spiritual and cultural depth of this music.

This album marks the return of the collaboration between Max, Veronica, and Mauro, closing a circle that began almost twenty years ago. The recordings were made live in the studio, with instruments and voices recorded together, without overdubs, capturing the warmth and natural energy of a true live performance.

All of this was made possible thanks to Bloos Records, led by multi-instrumentalist and producer Simone Scifoni, one of the most active independent Italian labels in the blues scene. Bloos Records embraces an eclectic approach to music, respecting the roots while always looking to the present, giving artists full freedom to express themselves without compromise.

Max De Bernardi, Mauro Ferrarese e Veronica Sbergia, tra i principali esponenti della musica roots americana in Italia, iniziano a collaborare nel 2007. L’idea di un album gospel nasce già allora, ispirata da una passione condivisa per il repertorio spirituale e sacro delle origini. Le loro strade si dividono per molti anni, e il progetto viene accantonato fino al 2024, quando – ritrovandosi artisticamente – decidono finalmente di dare vita a quella visione originaria. Questo album rappresenta, simbolicamente e artisticamente, la chiusura di un cerchio.

L’ensemble è interamente acustico e caratterizzato da una costruzione timbrica stratificata ma essenziale, che privilegia la resa naturale degli strumenti e la spazialità del suono. Le chitarre fingerstyle (in accordature standard e open tuning) dialogano con il timbro metallico del Dobro e della National, creando un paesaggio sonoro tipico del country blues e del gospel rurale degli anni ’20-’30. Il mandolino e la chitarra a dodici corde introducono una tessitura più brillante e ricca di armonici, mentre la washboard e le percussioni leggere mantengono l’elemento ritmico originario delle jug band e delle ring shout traditions.

Il pianoforte acustico, utilizzato anche in funzione ritmica oltre che armonica, e la celesta, scelta non solo per il colore timbrico ma per la sua qualità evocativa, aggiungono profondità agli arrangiamenti senza snaturarne la natura essenziale. La presenza della tromba amplia il respiro melodico, aggiungendo interventi di risposta, commento e controcanto, ispirati tanto al jazz primitivo quanto al gospel tradizionale da strada.

Le tre voci armonizzate, sono il fulcro dell’intero progetto: alternano unisono, sfalsamenti ritmici, call-and-response, linee di bordone e momenti di libertà espressiva, senza imitare i cori gospel tradizionali, ma reinterpretandoli con consapevolezza stilistica e autenticità emotiva.Registrato interamente live, per preservare l’anima originaria di queste canzoni: nulla è ricostruito, tutto è vissuto.
